Below, Genesis master coach Jonathan Wong answers some of the common questions we get from athletes.

FAQ For Athletes

What makes the Genesis Team qualified to help me excel in my sport?

Coach Jon: Our team is made up of guys who train, and mostly are former athletes themselves. Far more important that being an athlete, is understanding the demands of each sport. This is best learned by attending seminars and courses with people who coach the worlds bests athletes – medalists at the Olympic and World Championship level. Some of our mentors are listed on this page. The knowledge our team gains is incorporated into every program, and every yearly plan we develop for an athlete.

If you have never played the sport I play, how can you help me?

Coach Jon: The reason we are able to help athletes in different sports to improve, is because we are able to break down a sport into its components and develop a systematic plan to improve the components that the athlete is weak in. For example, an athlete who needs to throw a javelin would need special conditioning for his shoulders. Strong shoulder stabilizers would signal his brain to allow faster and harder throws, thus making him better at his sport.

What kind of training will I be doing?

Coach Jon: It is impossible to know. Only after we have done the assessment and consultation would your needs be more clear. However, from experience, the most “underdeveloped” parts of an athletes body are his shoulder stabilizers, lower back and Vastus medialis muscle in the thigh, so methods that range from regular training, to acupuncture, micro-current, Trigenics, and soft tissue work can be used to improve those, and other areas.

Do you help athletes peak for competition?

Coach Jon: Yes, peaking for competition is part of the package. In fact, if your schedule allows, we can even do so muscle strengthening “tricks” the day of your competition to give you an extra edge!

What kind of testing do you do to find our my strengths and weaknesses?

Coach Jon: Testing is critical to help us give you the best possible program. Depending on the nature of your sport, and you experience in gym training, we will do different tests. For beginners, we can simply test the length, and tension in your muscles to make sure that you don’t do exercises that are beyond your capability. For advanced athletes, we can do complete muscle testing to find dysfunctional muscles. And we can also do structural balance testing to see the ratios of strength between muscles. Each sport demands different ratios for success. For example, a high level rock climber needs to have better strength in the ratio of chin-up to bench press, than a shot-putter

Do you help me with nutrition and supplementation?

Coach Jon: Of course we do. Nutrition is extremely important for your performance. And there are well researched supplements that can help you recover from training, as well as improve concentration and focus. Supplements and nutrition are customized for each athelte according to their genetic type, current body-fat, the sport they play and what their current goals are.

I am often injured, how can you help me prevent this from happening?

Coach Jon: While injuries are part of many sports, they should not occur often from “non-contact”. E.g. sometimes it is impossible to prevent an injury in rugby where a big man tackles you, but if you are simply turning and damage a knee ligament, that should be preventable. Correct balance in your muscles, combined with improved flexibility and strength should drastically decrease your injury risk. In university studies, a good strength training program decreased time missed due to injures by at least 40%.

Do you have the equipment needed to train me for my sport?

Coach Jon: Genesis Gym has the most complete setup for athletes training in Singapore and probably in all of South East Asia. Our team and the Genesis gym have won high praise from men and women who are at the top of the Sports Conditioning world. And we certainly are not resting on our past successes, my team and I are constantly learning and improving ourselves to get clients better and better results.

What sort of results can I expect?

Coach Jon: It depends on your goals, experience, and current level of training and fitness. But the Genesis team is able to help you with any area of performance development you need. Strength, speed, flexibility or endurance, they all have proven, science based methods which we use to guarantee you a great result.
